CHRISTIAN COIGNY
16.01.–21.02.2005
In cooperation with Vitra, WestLicht is showing a series of 120 black and white prints by the Swiss photographer Christian Coigny. Over a period of many years he made portraits of many well-known personalities from different spheres seated on Vitra chairs.
The aim was to win over the most creative people from each category.
From the photographs it is quite clear that celebrities take the foreground—their individual attitudes and achievements. The “celebrities” regard their portraits as self-presentation, not as marketing. The performance of the photographer Christian Coigny is decisive to the quality of the image. He has succeeded in clearly expressing the character of the individual “celebrity” often in a short period of time and under difficult circumstances.
The exhibition is based on the advertising campaign “Personalities.” The adverts ran from 1987 – 1997 and appeared—appropriate to the target group—in renowned newspapers and magazines.
